The Self Love 13 Challenge

I don't do tags and challenges very often on this blog, but when I was tagged in this one by the lovely Dalal, I fell in love with it and you will soon understand why, if you don't know what it's about already.
We all know what 'self love' is but the reality is, none of us ever really do it, think about it, talk about it, whatever. It is so hard to say things that you love about yourself in society these days because 9 times out of 10, you'll get judged for it. And if you don't, half the time society has already 'labelled' it as something that you shouldn't love. To me, this is completely wrong.
I have written so many posts on this blog now about confidence and society, specifically aimed at teenage girls because I honestly feel so strongly about it. One day I am going to change it. Or that's the goal at least. Anyway, as I was saying, I wanted to do this tag and not only follow the 'tag 13 other bloggers' rule, but also tag everyone reading this right now to do it themselves. Leave it in the comments, tweet it, make a Facebook status, Instagram it. Whatever you want to do, please give this a go, even if you aren't a girl, boys can join in on this too!
I'm going to put every time I say the word love in italics just to emphasise the love here. Someone please count this for me I think it's going to be used a lot!
Here we go...

The Rules:
Write 13 things you love about yourself.
Tag 13 other bloggers to do this challenge.
Share with the hashtag '#selflovechallenge13'.

1. I love the fact that I suit my hair both really long and really short. It doesn't really look bad either way!

2. I love the colour of my eyes, I'm constantly told how blue they are and I didn't actually notice it until recently, but they are really blue!

3. I love my smile. I think my teeth are really white and I'm really lucky to have quite straight teeth naturally. I mean, they aren't perfect but they quite straight and it's all natural.

4. I love that I'm naturally quite a motivated and driven person. You don't normally have to ask me twice to do something I need or want to do. Tidying my room is a different story however, ask my mum.

5. I love that I'm genuinely interested in a lot of things. I've always been one for joining in with things and it has only brought me good things in life.

6. I love how proud I am of this blog for getting this far. 300 followers and almost 40,000 views may not be much to some, but to me that is insane and I'm proud of it.

7. I love that I'm not the type of person who gives up. I struggled with a lot of things, I'm mainly talking about school here, but I managed to pull through even when I really wanted to give up.

8. I love that I can be nice to people even when I am at rock bottom. It's so easy to be horrible to everyone when you're in a bad mood, but somehow I manage to keep it on the low when I'm around others. My parents may disagree with this... Maybe Matt too... They love me though...

9. I love that I voluntarily do things to help other people. I always look out for my friends and I do a lot of volunteer work as well as paid work, which I suppose isn't really volunteering but still, within my community.

10. I love that I'm not horrifically bad at academic or creative subjects. I'm pretty decent at both so I have quite open choices when it comes to careers and subjects etc.

11. I love how organised I am. I have notebooks and folders for everything, I write lists as well. It just makes life so much easier and I'm glad I have OCD for organisation...

12. I love that although I'm not the most confident person in the world, I seem to have helped quite a few people with confidence issues through this post just by writing and talking to them. Blogs are wonderful things people.

13. I love my fashion sense. This is a weird one because I wouldn't say I have a distinctive style, but I just really like the types of clothes I go for. I don't know if this even counts but there you go, 13 things is a lot and it's hard!

I think that last sentence says a lot about the reason I did this. We live in a world where it's hard to think of just 13 things we like about ourselves. I can count that on my fingers and toes. One day I promise this will change. That is my promise to you.

Now for the 13 lovely ladies I wish to tag!

1. Daisy
2. Libby
3. Olivia
5. Freya
6. Chloe
7. Hetty
8. Nidhi
9. Terica
10. Kate
11. Nia
12. Jess
13. Hannah

Please if you do this tag, use the hashtag and tag me in it on Twitter or Instagram or whatever! My Twitter is '@beccemily' and my Instagram is '@beccacockburnx' so please let me see them! I want to read every single one! Even if you don't have a blog, do it anyway because we all need to share a bit of self love!
How many loves did we have?

What do you love about yourself?

Summer Confidence

Summer is the main time of year where the sun comes out and so do the shorts, dresses, bikinis etc. and it can be really hard to be confident at the same time as being comfortable.

Sometimes the summer heat is very hot, even in the UK it can be very warm *she says sarcastically* no, it can sometimes to be honest. So, as a result of the warm weather, we have to wear clothing that keeps us cool. I think this is really hard for a lot of people because sun and heat often means showing off a little more skin than usual and that's hard for everyone. There's always a time when everyone has thought or felt they didn't look good in something, or didn't want to show their legs or belly for whatever reason. So, I want to discuss today how to stay confident and comfortable in summer! Because although we want to feel confident in what we're wearing, we also have to be comfortable and wearing all black everything sometimes isn't the best in the heat!

How Do I Stay Confident In Summer?...

I think a lot of people assume that I'm an extremely body-confident person because in summer, and sometimes in the cooler months, I wear skirts, shorts, crop tops etc. However, there are times when I really don't feel that confident in what I'm wearing, even if I look it. If I don't feel 100% confident in a crop top, shorts, dress whatever, I try to ignore it and just get on with it and tell myself I do look good and that outfit will keep me cool and get me a tan at the same time. Often, that's enough to get me out the door and feel good in it. However, having said that this doesn't always happen. Girls are known for changing their outfit 4 and 5 times before finally deciding on one outfit, sometimes even more, and that's what I do sometimes.
I think it's important to try and make yourself feel confident in an outfit, but at the same time you shouldn't push yourself to wear something you aren't comfortable in. If you go out in a pair of shorts you feel shows off too much of your legs and can't get that thought out of your head, whatever you are doing that day will suck because all you'll be thinking about is how you look. Wear what you are comfortable in, but make sure it is weather appropriate.

Another way I stay confident in summer is exercise. I have recently been going to the gym quite a lot and I have also frequently been doing ab exercises and work outs at home in my bedroom. It might not sound like it would bring confidence, but you'd be surprised at how much it helps. You may not notice any physical changes, but mentally you know that you've worked hard to wear that dress, and you look damn good in it. Sometimes just knowing you've tried to tone up or whatever you wanted to do is enough, even if it hasn't worked as well as you'd hoped. My plan this summer was to have a fully toned stomach, I've worked for it because I've done more ab workouts than I've ever done before, but it hasn't exactly shown the results I had seen in my head. But, you have to remember sometimes the vision you have in your head of how you want to look isn't possible. For example, I still look at models in magazines and say 'I wish my stomach looked that good' and then I remember, theirs probably doesn't even look that good. I guess the key to what I'm saying here is to mentally boost your confidence, with a few physical changes.

What Outfits Do I Feel Comfortable And Confident In?

So in this section of the post, I'm going to select a few random photos from various times, even various years, of summer outfits that I've worn and felt confident in and hopefully this will show you how you can stay cool, and be confident all at the same time!

So here's the first outfit which I wore a couple of weeks ago when I went to the beach with my friends for the day. Here all I'm wearing is a little white halterneck crop top from Primark and a pair of thin cotton floral shorts, also from Primark. I'm starting off in the deep end here with a crop top and shorts but I feel really confident in this outfit because I think the top goes with the shorts really well and I generally like the outfit all together. If you like it, why are you contemplating wearing it?

Okay so this is quite an old photo of me - really going through the old Facebook profile pics for this - but I think it's a really good one for confidence and comfort in summer. The Jack Daniels tank top is quite covering, just a little bit of arms and chest on show and having it tucked into my denim shorts from Primark, which I no longer own, makes it feel and look like it's covering even more. I also put tights on with this which means my legs aren't on show but it also means they don't get too hot!

Another really old one, apologies you can't see my face, although I'm not entirely sure that's a bad thing... Anyway, I love this dress but sadly it doesn't fit me anymore, this photo was taken about 2 and a half years ago! It's a super cute floral pattern and the frills make it look even cuter! It was quite a short dress but it was super comfortable and it kept me cool when it was really hot so it did it's job!

So, there's a few outfits that I felt really comfortable in but also very confident about myself!

How Can YOU Stay Confident AND Comfortable This Summer?

So finally I want to just give some general tips on how to be confident and comfortable just to sum this post up!

If you like an outfit, wear it. You wear clothes for yourself, no one else.

Be mentally confident. You do look good, I promise.

Only wear what YOU feel comfortable in. If you really don't, don't wear it.

Try to step out of your comfort zone at least once, even if it's only a little bit.

Stop thinking about it.

Do something that will make you feel better about it, e.g. exercise or healthy eating.

Do some research about your figure, work out what figure you have and find clothes that suit that style! I find it really helps!

And that's about it I guess! I hope you enjoyed this post and I hope it gave you some confidence to step out of your clothing comfort zone this summer!

What do you do to stay confident?

10 Things I Love About Blogging

Today I thought I'd put up a more chatty post because I don't do them very often and sometimes it's nice not to have to faff around with photos etc. So, as you might have guessed by the title I'm going to discuss the 10 best things about being a blogger!

I've been doing this for about 3 years now if you count my old blog and there are a lot of things I love about it, way more than 10! But I'm going to summarise it into the 10 best things for other bloggers to be able to relate to and also for anyone who is thinking about starting a blog and wants to know more about the perks - so it's one for everyone!

I also think that when people find out you're a blogger, the first thing they think of is free products, and for me that's totally not what it's about. So, I wanted to discuss the other things that make it all worthwhile. Of course none of us mind free products or getting paid (which by the way I have never done, this blog has earned me no money whatsoever, and I've only ever been sent one free product) but that isn't the sole reason we do it, it's because we love doing it!

So, without rambling on too much more I'm going to go ahead and get started!

One

The Blogging Community

I didn't realise how big the blogging community actually is until I started blogging myself. It's absolutely huge! I have made so many "internet friends" through my blog and it honestly makes me so happy! I'm in a group chat with the Secret Blogger Project girls and it really puts me at ease to know that there is always someone there who will answer when I need blogging or even life advice! These girls live all over the country, some even all over the world and the fact that I can talk to them so quickly and feel like I can relate to them is such an amazing feeling. People always talk about the hate that people get when they blog or vlog, however I've never *yet* experienced any myself. I have seen it, so I know it exists but I have had so much more praise and encouragement than anything else and that's one thing that I do like about it. All the bloggers just like to help each other out and it's a really satisfying feeling.

Two

It's Mine

One thing that I have always said to people when they ask my why I started a blog is, because it's mine. What better reason to start it? It's a little space on the huge world that we call the internet that is completely yours to do what you want with - within reason of course. I can make it look how I want and I can write what I want for me. And that's one of the most important things. It's great that other people enjoy my blog just as much as I do, but I love doing it for myself because it makes me happy and it's mine to do what I want. The fact that this little space on the internet is mine also allows me to write about all sorts of different things. My blog doesn't really fit into a category as I write about so many different things, but I like it that way. You can have it like me or you can specifically talk about beauty, or specifically talk about fashion. That's the beauty of it, it can be whatever you want it to be.

Three

I Can Help Other People

I most definitely do not write my blog for the pageviews or comments, but I always love seeing how well certain posts do and what sorts of comments I get back. Sometimes people comment giving me helpful feedback which I am always open to, but a lot of the time people are telling me how much a post helped them or how they wanted to go try a specific product I talked about. Helping other people is a huge bonus in blogging, because although I say I write it for me, I really do write it for you guys too because although I want to enjoy what I'm writing about, I also want you guys to enjoy it because so many of you are so loyal to this blog and comment on every post and I honestly can't thank you enough for that! But anyway, back to the point, being able to help people all over the world from my bed is the most amazing feeling in the world, I honestly can't describe how amazing it feels to know that you've helped just one person.

Four

It Gives Me Confidence

I'm not really a very confident person in real life, I may come across quite confident on here, or I might not, but I'm actually quite shy especially when it comes to meeting new people or big events where I don't know anyone. I didn't tell anyone about my blog for a really long time but then I realised, it's who I am why am I hiding it? It's a huge part of my life right now so what's the point in keeping it to myself? Since telling people about Becca Emily, my confidence has boosted so much. I get people telling me at school that they enjoyed reading my most recent post and things like that and it just makes me really happy after how much time and effort I put into it. If you're a blogger who has kept their blog to themselves for a really long time like me, if you have the confidence to out it then I honestly really suggest you do. It's only done good for me so you haven't got much to lose really! You can guarantee most people will be pretty supportive, and when you do get comments about it, it makes you so happy you feel like you could conquer the world!

Five

It's Fun

This is the most important thing for me. If you don't find it fun and you don't enjoy it, why are you doing it? I never really liked writing in school in English lessons, but on Becca Emily it's a completely different story. I sit and type for hours on end, I can write 3 or 4 posts in a day if I really pushed myself and sat to it. I lose track of time when I'm writing a new post, it isn't a chore and I don't feel like I'm wasting away. It's not for everyone, but if you feel like you have a lot to talk about but not enough people to share it with, then writing a blog is the perfect thing. I have always loved taking photos and now I get to take them all the time because I have a place where I can write about all the photos that I take and I can showcase my photography - I know sometimes it isn't that fabulous but hey ho.

Six

It's Something Slightly Different

There aren't many people who I personally know, like physically in person who write a blog. I do know a few, but not very many. This is what made blogging appeal to me, I knew that not many people did it, and at the time I didn't know anyone who wrote a blog when I originally started doing it myself, but I did it because it was different and the fear of the unknown intrigued me. I didn't know what blogging was really going to entail but I knew that I wanted to try it. People go to football clubs, I go dancing and I sing in a choir, so many people do those things but I feel that blogging is something a little different, and for me it was stepping a little bit outside of my comfort zone. Although the blogging community is huge, it's minuscule compared to the world, so to me it's something totally different and really quite new.

Seven

It Allows Me To Discover New Things

I have discovered so many new products and also new people from writing a blog. Bloggers talk to each other, and we also read each other's reviews and tutorials to see what's good and what isn't so good before we buy it. I know before I buy a product I always search a number of blogs for a review to make sure that I'm not going to waste my money on a product that I'm only going to be disappointed with when I start using it. My makeup collection in particular has grown massively, which hasn't been good for my money situation, but anyway, I have been able to try so many new things because I've read about them. My makeup collection isn't huge, but it's definitely a lot bigger than it was and I only have blogging to thank for that. It's officially become an obsession, but it's okay because I don't often have money so I can't go extreme. *silently cries*

Eight

It Allows Me To Completely Open Up My Mind

This kind of relates to what I was saying about it being a space on the internet that is mine, but I want to go into a little more detail here. I don't often talk about half the stuff that I think about because I think that people won't be interested and I feel like people will get bored. However, I feel like when I'm writing a blog post I can ramble on as much as I want because the internet is such a huge place, someone is bound to fully read everything I've said. Yeah, some people will probably have skim read this and won't have a clue about what I've said, but some people will have thoroughly read this whole post through and may or may not have enjoyed it, but that's beside the point. Having a blog allows me to discuss things I may not usually in a lot more depth which doesn't often happen, for people like me anyways.

Nine

My Opinion Can Be Heard

Please note that this is all within reason guys! We all have an opinion, on this page mine is often about beauty products but it could be about anything, WITHIN REASON - I keep stressing that but it's so important I don't want people to start writing extremely racist or sexist stuff all over the internet and then saying I said it was okay, so please don't do that! But, as I was saying, you can voice your opinion and someone out there will hear it. In some ways I guess you could change this to say your voice can be heard. I think blogging could be really good for someone who is really quiet and shy because it would give them somewhere to write down their thoughts and someone can read it, but it means they wouldn't have to say it to their face.

Ten

My Blog Is A Place Where I Can Be Myself

There is no one who can tell you who you are on your page. People try to belittle you all the time, in school etc, trust me I know I've been there, but they can't do it here. I can 100% be myself and I feel completely comfortable sharing the things that I share with you guys that read this, weekly, monthly etc. It's so hard especially for teenagers because you're judged all the time in person when you're out in town or anywhere really, but on your own blog you are already the better person and you can be yourself because no one can tell you what to do there, and if they do, you can delete their comment or message etc. and ignore it completely because you created this space for yourself so you have to use it.

I feel like I might have repeated myself a few times in this but oh well, I hope you enjoyed it and I hope it was helpful or relatable for you in some way!

What do you love about blogging?

Struggles Of Being A Teen

So, I am now taking part in another blogging project, alongside the Secret Blogger Project but this one is called the Teens Tell Their Story Project, and it's basically a topic a week to write about and I guess it'll probably just be general things! I will leave a link to Caitlin and Sherina's blogs at the end of this post as they are the creators and I'm sure they would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the project!

So, the first topic is the Struggles Of Being A Teen and I honestly think this is such a perfect topic to start this project off with because let's be real, being a teen comes with a lot of struggles. So, I'm not going to waste anymore time rambling on and I'm just going to get straight into it!

SCHOOL STRESS

I think school and the pressure put on teenagers at school is one of the biggest problems for teenagers right now. Whether it's GCSEs, A Levels, college courses whatever, it's really stressful and there is a hell of a lot of pressure put on people to pass, to get good grades, to even really push for the highest grades possible. I understand our teachers want us to reach our full potential, and I want to reach my full potential too but having just finished GCSEs and having to take 7 subjects, it's a lot of pressure to do well on ALL of them. I think I had about 17 exams in total, including my practicals in dance and that is a lot, we are still children and I think sometimes that is forgotten because these are the grades that we need in order to live a successful life. I think the fact that your teachers say 'this will affect you for the rest of your life' so many times until it makes your ears bleed, puts so much extra unnecessary pressure on kids. But, I guess we have to get on with it if we want to get a job...

PHYSICAL CHANGES

I don't want to go into too much detail with this because if I do I'll end up sounding like that school nurse that came to talk to you about puberty etc. in middle school. However, the physical changes that happen in the body are at their peak in teenage years which makes it even harder for us. I think hormones are the biggest problem because let's be honest, they control everything. I don't really know if it's worse for boys or girls but I feel it might be worse for girls with the menstrual cycle etc. so I'm going to speak from a girl's point of view on this one. Hormones literally control everything we do, in my opinion although that may be a little extreme, but I over exaggerate a lot, moving on. I find that I can go from being the happiest person in the world to rock bottom within 2 seconds flat, and that sucks. I feel like I'm going off the physical changes thing here a little... But I guess hormones in the body control the physical changes in the body, yeah, let's go with that.

RELATIONSHIPS

When I use the term 'relationships' I use it loosely as I am referring to both intimate and friendly relationships here. Building relationships as a teenager is so hard I think we underestimate it because it was so easy as a child. People say things get easier as you get older but for me personally, building relationships with people is something that just gets harder with age. Whether it be a boy or girl you're completely head-over-heels in love with or someone you would just really like to be friends with, making the first move and starting that relationship can be really difficult. I feel that there's some sort of wall that's built up between teenagers because it's such a judgmental generation, am I the only one who thinks that? I feel that teenagers, more specifically teenage girls, judge each other like there's no tomorrow and I think that's the main problem. We judge each other before one word has been said and it really isn't fair, but that just seems to be how the world works these days.
Another thing about relationships is once you have that relationship with someone, keeping it the way you want it to be and keeping it good can be super difficult too because again, the judgmental and jealous generation that we live in sucks. There are too many things of getting in the way of keeping a good strong relationship with people, my bet is technology...

CONFIDENCE

I have written a few posts about being confident now and I will be writing many more in the future but I think confidence in teenagers lacks so much, I even lack confidence myself so I know that it's a huge issue for people my age. Again, I think one of the main problems is the judgmental society we live in but I also think the media plays a huge part in how confident teenagers are with themselves, and more specifically their bodies and their appearance. I've seen countless articles and interviews etc. about the media and the effect it has on teenagers, more commonly girls, and how they view themselves. Magazines, TV shows, you name it, we've all sat there and said to ourselves 'I wish I looked that good' but honestly, they don't really look that good either. I've said the same thing so many times on this blog now but I can't say it enough! These people have someone touching up their hair and makeup every 30 seconds, they have lights, photoshop, everything! They have absolutely everything there for them and that's how they look that good, I bet if you saw them in real life they wouldn't look as good as they did in that picture.

CAREERS AND JOBS

I've recently been doing some part time job hunting after finishing my GCSE's and honestly, it's been so much more difficult than I thought it would be. I saw something on the news a while ago that said there was something like 14% of teenagers were employed last year, or something along those lines I can't quite remember what it said, but I remember thinking, if only they realise how hard it actually is for someone of the age of about 16 or 17 to get a job. My problem has been experience, but how can anywhere expect me to have experience if no one will take me on and give me that experience? It's a hard thing to do. Staying along the lines of work, choosing your career path is also so hard at this age but there is also again a lot of pressure to have some idea of what you want to do and where you want to take your life. Currently I'm settled on the idea of event management or photography, and possible interest in interior design. But I have changed my mind multiple times and I'm sure it will change again at some point. You get interviews at school, college etc. where people ask you what you want to do when you're older and you just freeze...

I guess that's everything I have to say for today! I really enjoyed this as a first topic for this new project I am a part of and I hope you all enjoyed reading it just as much!

Accepting Me

Teenagers and young girls have so much pressure on being “perfect” from the media these days, and the truth is, it’s dangerous. Not many teenage girls know how to be confident anymore because no one knows what confidence is anymore, many believe it doesn’t even exist.
Today I want to talk to you about how I stay confident in the hope that some of you guys might be able to do the same, in your own way or in a similar way to me.

BE YOURSELF

How could you be confident in your own body without being who you really are? If you like that dress, buy it and wear it with every bit of pride you have in you. Heck, buy those shoes to go with it too. If you like something, wear it or use it. Were all so wound up in a world where the world’s opinion matters more than your own. The truth is ladies, no one really cares what you wear or what you do, they’re too busy focussing on themselves. Don’t waste your life trying to be who everyone else wants you to be and just be you. God made you perfect in YOUR OWN WAY, so embrace it. The world is your oyster, make the most of it and leave your footprint.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY

Some people think confidence is all internal and it’s a very individual thing, but if you are constantly putting yourself in a position where you’re with people who aren’t making you happy, who you don’t have fun with, you’re going to notice more things to doubt about yourself. You’ll start thinking you don’t fit in, that there’s something wrong with you because you don’t like the same things they do etc. There’s nothing wrong with you, and you do fit in. You just need to find the right people to make you feel like you fit in, and I promise you once you find those people, you will feel so much more  confident in yourself within a group.

SMILE

Everyone likes to see someone with a smile on their face. It even feels good to know you have a smile on your face yourself. If you look at life with a frown, everything will be much greyer leading you to feeling like everyone in the whole world is out to ruin your day. Look at yourself in the mirror, smile and tell yourself how good your butt looks in those jeans you bought a year ago but never had the confidence to wear because you thought ‘your butt looked big in them’. I promise you, your butt looks fine. Smiling could also make someone else feel more confident. If someone smiles at me in the street, I feel more confident in myself as a person as they clearly felt I looked like a nice, friendly person to smile at. So I smile back, and that is one of the best feelings in the world. You might just brighten someone else’s day too! It’s been proven that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile, save your energy.

EAT WHAT YOU WANT

The biggest problem relating to body confidence is weight, size, shape etc. and THAT IS NOT IMPORTANT. People all over this world are all different shapes and sizes because we were made to be different. Those girls you see in the magazines don’t really look like that. Their boobs and bums aren’t actually that big, their waists aren’t that tiny and they aren’t that curvy and toned. Yes, they may be pretty and have a pretty good figure, but before you see those photos they are edited so much, it could be a different person in some cases. Eating that chocolate bar will not make you gain 10 stone, so why exaggerate? You don’t need to go on a diet and you don’t need to do extreme amounts of exercise. Yes eating healthy and keeping yourself fit and in shape is perfect. But don’t overdo it.

DO WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD

In order to be a confident person you have to do what makes YOU feel good. If doing some light exercise makes you feel a bit more body confident, do it. If getting on that crowded train makes you feel more confident in a public place, do it. Do whatever you feel you can to be more confident physically and mentally because you only get one life, so why live it wishing you looked like someone else or thought like someone else. If you feel good about something you are so much more likely to feel more confident in yourself during doing that and after you’ve done it. There’d also be a huge sense of pride, and if you don’t see it, no one else will. Be proud of yourself and let the whole world know it!

So that’s it, I think confidence is a huge issue at the moment for teenage girls specifically, all striving for perfection that doesn’t even exist. It’s a stupid dream no one should spend their whole life worrying about because EVERYONE IS PERFECT and I love you all.
I hope you enjoyed this post and if it helped one of you, then I am a very happy girl indeed.
I want you all to do something for me… I want you to do all of the things I’ve discussed in this post, even if you just try it quickly. You never know, it might make a difference. Even if just one of the five things helps you, it’s a brilliant thing for you so be happy about it. If you can complete one of these things successfully and feel good about it afterwards, you’ve done something amazing for yourself and I hope this has helped.

See you soon

Love, Becca
